Design Process

  • A printed client brief form from Simon Deeves Garden Design on a clipboard, with a black pen resting on top of it.

    Initial Consultation

A chance for us to meet and for me to visit your garden. This is a great opportunity for us to discuss your initial thoughts and aspirations for the garden, and for me to explain the process and available options to you. We will work through a questionnaire so that I can capture the fine details of your project needs.

After this initial meeting you will receive an email summarising the points discussed and outlining the next steps of the design package.

This consultation is usually free of charge although a fee may be applicable depending on travel distance.

  • Site survey plan showing trees, building outlines, steps, pathways, and contour lines indicating elevation changes.

    Site Survey & Appraisal

Before starting any design work it is important to undertake a site survey and analysis. An accurate scale drawing of the existing site is required to record measurements, levels, boundaries, utilities and the features in the garden that are to remain. An in depth analysis will involve soil samples, photographs and observations to understand the site’s soil type, orientation and context.

The survey drawing recording this information is later used as the template for producing the Master Layout Plan detailing the new design.

For large or complex sites the topological survey may require outsourcing to a professional land surveyor.

  • Collage of various landscaped gardens and outdoor spaces, including pathways, water features, flowering trees, and decorative plant arrangements.

    Mood Boards

Mood boards act as both a development and communication tool in these early design stages. This is where the creativity begins and the concepts of your design start to take form.

We use mood boards as working documents to convey design concepts, colours and themes, along with suggestions of hard landscaping (materials), soft landscaping (planting) and special garden features. It’s an important stage that encourages dialogue between us in visual format and really helps give direction to the design.

  • Architectural rendering of a landscaped public space with a wooden walkway, water courses, and flower borders, overlooking a body of water in the background.

    3D Visuals

3D representations help bring the proposed concepts to life and provide another useful visual communication aid as we discuss and develop the design.

I offer the option of 3D visuals to help convey the design ideas and enable you to see and approve specific elements of the garden.

  • Architectural site plan of a garden with various recreational areas, including an outdoor dining area, flower borders, a pool, and green spaces with trees.

    Master Layout Plan

The Master Layout Plan is a scaled drawing of the finalised garden design, based upon your client brief and the agreed concepts developed from mood boards and/or 3D visuals.

This plan is a fully annotated, detailed drawing that contains information about hard landscaping, levels, garden features and structural planting, and how they relate to each other. The plan will provide enough information and specifications for a Landscaper to quote against and ultimately implement final build.

Note, larger or more complex sites may require more than one masterplan. Some projects may require additional drawings for specific design requirements.

  • A detailed border planting plan with photos of various plants and their names, a planting schedule, and a layout showing plant placements and spacing.

    Planting Plans

Well thought out planting brings the garden together, adding colour, texture and structure, and providing a softening contrast to hard landscaping where needed.

I create professional standard planting plans as part of the design process, using carefully considered planting to suit aspect and soil type, whilst working to your bespoke colour scheme and style. These detailed scale plans specify the quantity and location of each plant using botanical plant names so that they can be used as the basis for plant sourcing and for setting out.

  • Inside a large greenhouse with rows of potted plants and seedlings growing on raised beds. The greenhouse has a clear, curved roof supported by metal beams, with irrigation systems overhead and walkways between the plant beds.

    Plant Sourcing

Working with local nurseries I can source and supply the highest quality plants in accordance with the planting plans at the best possible prices. All of which can be delivered straight to site ready for planting up.

  • Garden with potted plants, blooming flowers, trimmed bushes, and a lawn near a gravel pathway.

    Setting Out & Planting

I can work on site to oversee the setting out and planting in order to reflect the designed planting plans. You may wish to use your own gardener for this, or indeed do it yourself. Alternatively, I can arrange planting with my contacts who will work under my guidance.

I am always happy to collaborate as required on this process.

  • A collection of gardening tools, including shovels, a fork, and a trowel, hanging on a wall-mounted rack.

    Maintenance Guides

Taking ownership of a new garden is an exciting prospect. However, depending on your experience, it can be a little daunting.

As an additional service, I can provide a bespoke month-by-month, season-by-season, plant maintenance guide for you or your gardener to follow and implement.
